New legislation

14 Nov 2011

On 12th November 2011 a Constitutional Law on amending Paragraph 17 of the Constitutional Law on implementing Paragraph 3 of Article 47 of the Constitution of the Republic of Lithuania (hereinafter – the “Constitutional Law”) came into force, extending the ban on selling agricultural land to foreigners. The extension mentioned was previously approved by the European Commission, which agreed to extend the previously stated transitional period that expired in May this year.

The actual wording of the Paragraph 2 of Article 17 of the Constitutional Law states that: “Foreigners, who meet the criteria set out in Article 4 of the Law, except for the foreigners, who have been permanent residents for the past 3 years and were engaged in the agricultural activities, also foreign entities and other foreign organizations that have established an agency or a subsidiary in Lithuania, are not allowed to acquire agricultural land until 30 April, 2014”.
