Double citizenship

12 Nov 2021

Over the years, the law firm has been helping descendants of the Lithuanian expats to restore the Lithuanian citizenship. Descendants of the Lithuanian citizens often take the opportunity to claim double citizenship.

Lithuanian citizenship is restored for persons who held Lithuanian citizenship before 15th June 1940 and left the Republic of Lithuania due to the danger of persecution before 11th March 1990, as well as for their descendants, not applying the procedure of the renouncement of the citizenship already held. If any of ancestors, parents, grandparents, grand-grandparents were born in Lithuania, a person may be eligible to obtain a Lithuanian (EU) passport. We normally assist in the whole process from searching for family’s documents in the Lithuanian archives to submitting of the application to the Lithuanian authorities and monitor the process. From time to time, we also challenge decisions of the Lithuanian authorities if applications are dismissed for some reason.

Recently, our law firm assisted a Canadian citizen who applied for the citizenship of the Republic of Lithuania. The applicant’s father was a citizen of the Republic of Lithuania in 1926, later went to Germany and eventually moved to Canada.  The Lithuanian citizenship was restored to the person for the reason that the applicant was a descendant of a citizen of the Republic of Lithuania who had citizenship of the Republic of Lithuania before 15 June 1940.

If a person decides to apply for double citizenship, the following documents confirming that the person or his ancestors had the citizenship of the Republic of Lithuania before 15 June 1940 must be collected:

• Domestic or foreign passports of the Republic of Lithuania issued before 15 June 1940;

• Foreign passports of the Republic of Lithuania issued by diplomatic missions or consular posts of the Republic of Lithuania after 15 June 1940;

• Documents certifying a person's service in the Lithuanian Armed Forces or work in the civil service;

• Birth certificates or other documents directly indicating the citizenship of the Republic of Lithuania;

• Identity cards issued before 15 June 1940 in Lithuania, or identity cards issued on the basis of documents issued before 15 June 1940.
