Double citizenship

5 Jan 2017

In the Republic of Lithuania some favourable amendments to the Law on Citizenship have come into force according to which persons whose ancestors were citizens of Lithuania have the right to reinstate Lithuanian citizenship regardless of the place of their permanent residency and current citizenship. However, a person wishing to obtain dual citizenship may face some difficulties. We provide some information that may be found useful:

When a citizen of a foreign country can also obtain the Lithuanian citizenship?

- when he/she is:

  1. A person who held Lithuanian citizenship before 15 June 1940; and
  2. A person who left Lithuania before 11 March 1990 for permanent residence abroad (except the territory of former USSR) and on 11 March 1990 the place of such person’s permanent residence was outside Lithuania OR a person who was exiled from the occupied Republic of Lithuania before March 11, 1990 and acquired citizenship of another state; or
  3. A descendant of a person defined in clauses 1. or 2. above.

Documents that need to be submitted for reinstatement of Lithuanian citizenship:

  1. Application form;
  2. Documents certifying the person’s identity;
  3. Documents evidencing the change of name or surname where such personal data have been changed;
  4. Documents proving a Lithuanian origin (documents proving that parents or grandparents of the person held citizenship of Lithuania before 15 June 1940 such as passport, birth certificate, or other documents containing reference to citizenship);
  5. Criminal record check issued by the competent foreign authorities;
  6. Document evidencing that the state fee has been paid.

All required documents shall be submitted in Lithuanian or accompanied by a certified translation into Lithuanian language, all copies must be verified by a public notary and all documents issued abroad shall have an Apostille (shall be legalized).
