Legislation update - new Labour Code

16 Sep 2016

On 14 September 2016 the Parliament overrode the veto imposed by the President of the Republic of Lithuania and passed the new Labour Code adopted on 21 June 2016.

The main changes in the new Labour Code are the following:

  • New types of employment contracts are established: project employment contract, job sharing employment contract, employment contract of indeterminate scope and employment contract of working for several employers.
  • Each month an employer shall inform its employees about their wage and worked hours.
  • New provisions regarding termination of employment contracts and severance pay are set.
  • The maximum amount of overtime worked per year is increased.
  • The calculation of annual leave will be made in working days instead of calendar days.
  • New conditions for compensation of damages are set.
  • Amendments to collective labour relations are introduced.
  • Amendments concerning strikes and procedures for their organisation are adopted.
  • New labour dispute settlement procedures are introduced.

The new wording of the Labour Code will take effect on 1 January 2017 and is available here.
