Recent amendments to the Law on the Notary Office came into force on 1 January 2016 public notaries in Lithuania are empowered to authenticate official documents with Apostille. Prior to such legislative changes, the Consular Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs was the only institution authorized to authenticate official documents with Apostille. Now persons wishing to authenticate an official document with Apostille don’t need to go to the Consular Department of Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Vilnius, they just need to address the nearest public notary. Nonetheless, the Consular Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs preserves the authority to authenticate documents submitted through diplomatic missions and consular posts of the Republic of Lithuania.
The legislative changes are aimed at ensuring better access of people to the procedures of authentication of official documents with Apostille, as well as at simplifying such procedures and making them cheaper.
