On 24 May 2011 the European Court of Justice (Grand Chamber) concluded that by imposing a nationality condition for access to the profession of civil law notary, the Kingdom of Belgium has failed to fulfill its obligations under Article 43 EC. According to the Court, the nationality condition required by Belgian legislation for access to the profession of notary constitutes discrimination on grounds of nationality prohibited by Article 43 EC. (Case C-47/08).
