Lithuanian citizenship

The Government of the Republic of Lithuania has published a draft resolution on the description of the procedure for preparing citizenship documents of the Republic of Lithuania. This resolution shall enter into force on 1st February 2021. 

According to this Description, applications for citizenship of the Republic of Lithuania, notifications to swear an oath to the Republic of Lithuania as well as applications for the issue or change of a certificate of restoration of citizenship and applications for a certificate of Lithuanian origin must be completed in Lithuanian or English through the Lithuanian Migration Information System (MIGRIS).

These requests or notifications shall be accompanied by the specified documents, except for travel documents, which must be written in Lithuanian or a translation of these documents into Lithuanian, which must be certified by a person or institution entitled to translation from one language to another.

In the event that a person is unable to complete the application through the MIGRIS system for objective reasons, he or she may do so by submitting it in person at the Migration Department. When required, each document issued abroad must be notarized, legalized and certified with an Apostille, except for travel documents. If the original documents are submitted to the Migration Department by a representative, he or she must also submit a valid identity document and a representation agreement. Applications are accepted by an authorized employee of the Migration Department, a civil servant, a consular officer or an employee authorized by a consular post.
