Restoring the Lithuanian citizenship

20 Dec 2021

The law firm recently encountered an interesting case in relation to the restoration of the citizenship of the Republic of Lithuania to a citizen of the Republic of Cuba.

With assistance of the law firm, a Cuban national successfully regained his Lithuanian nationality through an ancestor who went and stayed to Cuba. During the examination of the client's application, the Migration Department requested submission of additional documents explaining in what year the applicant’s ancestor had acquired the citizenship of the Republic of Cuba. The relevant evidence could have been a naturalization certificate issued by the competent authority of the Republic of Cuba or an extract from the population register. If the ancestor who fled Lithuania had not acquired the citizenship of the Republic of Cuba, the Migration Department requested to provide documents proving the legal status of the person residing in Cuba. After submission of the required documentation, the Migration Department arrive to the conclusion to restore the citizenship of the Republic of Lithuania to our client.

Over the recent years, lawyers of our firm witness the changed practice regarding the restoration of the citizenship of the Republic of Lithuania, when the Lithuanian authorities had taken a strict rule of interpretation of the relevant clauses of the Citizenship Law of the Republic of Lithuania permitting the descendants of the Lithuanian nationals to restore the Lithuanian citizenship.
